Technical FAQ

Find guidance on choosing a VP fuel, checking product information, storing fuel and arranging supply in Europe. Follow the current product label and approved product information. If you need help, send us the product name and details of your application.

Choosing a fuel

How do I know which VP fuel is right for my engine?

Start with your engine manufacturer's requirements and, if you race, the rules for your championship and class. The correct choice also depends on the engine configuration, tuning, fuel-system compatibility and whether a catalytic converter is fitted. Use the product catalogue to compare documented specifications. If you are unsure, contact our team with your engine details, current fuel and intended use before changing fuel.

What if I am not sure which regulations apply to me?

Check the current technical regulations for your championship, class and event, or ask the organiser or technical scrutineer. Some series require a nominated fuel; others specify permitted fuel properties. Send us the relevant regulation or fuel requirement if you would like help identifying suitable VP products.

Can I use a leaded VP fuel in an engine with a catalytic converter?

Do not use leaded fuel in a catalyst-equipped vehicle. Choose a product with explicitly documented compatibility for your application. "Unleaded" alone does not confirm that every aspect of a fuel is suitable for your engine, sensors or fuel system. Check the product information and your engine manufacturer's requirements before use.

What is the difference between RON, MON and AKI?

RON and MON are octane ratings measured under different test conditions. AKI, also written as (R+M)/2, is the average of RON and MON. Compare values using the same scale: an AKI figure should not be compared directly with a RON figure. Our fuel specifications identify the scale alongside each value.

What does FIA-compliant mean?

It means that the product meets the applicable FIA fuel specifications identified in its documentation. Your championship or class may impose additional requirements or nominate a specific fuel. Check the current regulations before use.

What is the difference between 2T and 4T fuel?

Choose according to the engine's fuel and lubrication requirements. The 2T and 4T names identify different intended applications; they do not make the products interchangeable. For a two-stroke engine, check the product's oil content and mix ratio against the engine manufacturer's requirements. Contact us with your equipment model if you need help confirming the correct product.

Shelf life

How long can VP race fuel be stored before it degrades?

There is no single storage period that applies to every VP fuel. Use the guidance for the exact product and distinguish an unopened original container from fuel that has been opened or transferred. Storage conditions and handling also matter. If the documentation does not state a period for your situation, send us the product name, batch details and storage history so we can request product-specific guidance.

Does shelf life differ between leaded and unleaded blends?

Storage behaviour depends on the complete formulation, packaging and conditions, not simply whether the fuel contains lead. Do not apply the stated shelf life of one product to another. Refer to the information for the exact blend and container you use.

How can I tell whether a drum has passed its usable life?

Check the product and batch information, the applicable storage guidance, the container's condition and its storage history. Appearance or smell alone cannot confirm that a fuel remains within specification. Do not deliberately inhale vapour or test uncertain fuel by running it in an engine. If age, contamination or storage conditions are in doubt, keep the fuel out of service and ask for product-specific advice, including whether testing or disposal is appropriate.

Storage

What temperature range is suitable for storing race fuel?

Follow the current product label and approved storage requirements, including any specified temperature limits. Use a storage location suitable for that product and quantity, with the required ventilation, separation from ignition sources and other controls. Contact us if you cannot find the applicable storage information.

Can race fuel be stored outdoors or in direct sunlight?

Follow the product's documented storage conditions and protect containers from direct sunlight, excessive heat and damage. An indoor location is not automatically suitable: it must be appropriate for storing the product safely and meet the applicable requirements. Do not assume that a covered outdoor space or a domestic room is an acceptable storage area.

What containers are suitable for long-term storage?

Keep fuel in its original, correctly closed and labelled container where the product instructions permit. If transfer is necessary, use a compatible container approved for the intended use and follow the relevant handling requirements. A container marketed as a utility jug is not automatically approved for fuel storage or transport. Check the product and container documentation before use.

Supply and shipping in Europe

What dangerous-goods / ADR classification applies to VP race fuel?

The classification depends on the exact product. Requirements also depend on the transport mode, packaging, quantity and route. Provide the product name, pack size, quantity and destination when requesting delivery so that the applicable arrangements can be confirmed.

Can race fuel be delivered directly to me, or do I need to buy through a dealer?

Supply options depend on your location, product, quantity and customer type. Use Where to Buy to find a supplier or send us an enquiry with your delivery postcode and requirements. We will confirm the available route, delivery terms and quotation before an order is agreed.

What documentation is needed to move race fuel across an EU border?

There is no single document set for every shipment. Requirements depend on the product, transport mode, quantities, origin and destination, and the relevant customs or excise status. Ask the supplier and carrier to confirm the documents and responsibilities for the specific movement before dispatch.

Need help with a specific application?

Send us the product you are considering, your engine or equipment model, current fuel and intended use. For racing enquiries, include the championship, class and relevant fuel rules.
