Restore or Unleash: The VP Octane Story

Nobody asks for an octane booster. They arrive with an engine that has started to ping under load on fuel it used to run fine on, or a build that needs more octane than any pump fuel carries to make the power it was built for.

Those are two different requests — restore an engine to the octane it was designed around, or unleash it past what pump fuel can give it — and VP builds three products across that line rather than one all-purpose additive.

01

Octane Booster: The Restore Option

Octane Booster is VP's entry point: a 16 oz bottle built for a road-going petrol engine that needs its octane put back, not raised past standard. VP rates it at up to 5 numbers (50 points) of octane gain, and it's built to work alongside oxygen sensors and catalytic converters rather than around them.

Like the rest of the range, it's not just an octane number in a can. VP's own description cleans fuel injectors, prevents gum and varnish build-up, and eliminates the knocking and pinging that a tank of tired or low-octane fuel causes.

Octanium Unleaded: The Bigger Restore

Octanium Unleaded is the same idea in a bigger bottle, for an engine that needs more restoring. VP rates it at up to 7 numbers (70 points), still safe for oxygen sensors and catalytic converters, in a 32 oz bottle rather than 16 oz.

VP's own dosing is specific about how far to push it: a vehicle with emission control devices fitted is limited to 11 oz per 10 gallons of fuel, while a vehicle with none can run up to 23 oz per 10 gallons for long-term use, or 32 oz per 10 gallons for short-term use — though VP says that top dose calls for more frequent maintenance to prevent damage or coating to engine parts.

Octanium: The Unleash Option

Octanium is VP's strongest octane booster and the one built for off-road and competition vehicles rather than a daily driver. VP rates it at up to 8 numbers (80 points) of octane gain — enough, VP says, to work as a lead substitute in two- or four-cycle petrol engines — and, like the rest of the range, it's safe for engines with oxygen sensors and catalytic converters.

It carries the same injector-cleaning, gum-and-varnish, anti-knock claims as the other two, aimed at the same problem: an engine asking for more octane than a pump has, before ignition timing and cylinder pressure start taking pistons with them.

What Every VP Booster Does

All three share the same engineering, at three different strengths:

  • Raises octane: reduces how easily the fuel detonates before the spark, at up to 5, 7 or 8 numbers depending on the product.
  • Cleans and protects: cleans fuel injectors and prevents gum and varnish build-up as it works.
  • Eliminates knocking and pinging: VP's chemistry is built to stop the power-robbing detonation a fuel short on octane causes.

All three are light-sensitive and should be kept out of light and away from freezing, and can discolour light-coloured plastic tanks and containers — VP's own handling notes, carried here rather than left on the bottle alone.

What VP Stands Behind

Fuel, oil, coolant and brake fluid are all VP's answer to the same question: what does this engine actually need at the limit? Octane is no different. Some engines have simply lost octane they used to have; others were built to run on more of it than a pump will ever carry. VP's case for three separate boosters, rather than one, is that a driver in either position should be able to buy the product built for their problem, not a compromise built for both.
